Women

UNISON has almost one million women members - more than two thirds of our union. Women still earn a lot less than men and face sex discrimination and harassment at work. Our members also juggle work and home commitments. Many have caring responsibilities and almost half work part-time. This is why UNISON takes a lead on negotiating and campaigning on women's rights at work and in the community. To get involved in our campaign go to Link to another page on this siteEqual Pay.

Enough is enough - Why women must vote 'yes' and take action to defend pensions

We have fought for thousands of women who worked part time and who were denied access to their employer's pension scheme to be able to join those schemes, and to have their contributions backdated; also for the state pension to recognise the reality of women's working lives - their caring responsibilities, time taken out of the workforce and their lower earning ability throughout their career

Defend a womans right to choose

(11/08/11) UNISON policy is to support a woman’s right to choose. The issue was debated again at national womens conference in 2009, where delegates restated the belief that a woman's right to choose with regards to abortion is fundamental to her political, social and economic equality.

Stop CSA Charges – don’t make children pay the price

(20/7/11) UNISON is supporting Gingerbread, the lone parents group, who are campaigning against proposals included in the Welfare Reform Bill which would see the introduction of fees for parents wishing to use the CSA to ensure that parents contribute towards the cost of their children’s upbringing.

Support Breast Cancer Care – Host a Strawberry Tea

(9/7/11) There’s something especially delicious about a cake made by someone you know. Which is why, every year, Breast Cancer Care asks for our support  and for UNISON members to get baking and host a Strawberry Tea to raise money for a very good cause.

Mary Seacole Appeal

(1/6/11) In 1853 war broke out in the Crimea and the following year Mary Seacole travelled to London to offer her services to nurse soldiers alongside Florence Nightingale at Scutari. Despite her glowing references from senior medics in Jamaica and Panama her offer of help was rejected five times. Refusing to succumb to discrimination Mary raised the funds for her passage to the Crimea where in 1854 she set up the British Hotel. Here she provided soldiers with accommodation, food and nursing care.

TUC says cuts will reduce women's income and widen the 'gender pay gap'

(17/12/2010) The TUC has recently published a report on the cuts which confirms that public sector job losses and cuts in benefits will disproportionately affect women and will be a step backwards in the progress made in recent years to reduce the gender pay gap.

Workplace policies on domestic abuse

(updated 16/08/10) UNISON was one of the first unions to raise the issue of domestic abuse in the workplace and negotiate workplace policies. A new model domestic abuse policy for negotiation with employers has been published as a result of the National Women's Conference 2010's motion 23.
