Middle East/North Africa

Palestine and Israel

UNISON has clear policy on Palestine and the Middle East peace process as set out in several National Delegate Conference (NDC) motions over the past few years.

Iran

UNISON opposes the violation of trade union rights in Iran and stands in solidarity with Iranian workers fighting for their fundamental right to freedom of association and the right to organise. UNISON will continue to highlight the violation of trade union and human rights in Iran at the highest level, and campaign for workers to have their rights respected.

Iraq

UNISON opposed the war in Iraq and has called for an end to the occupation. But UNISON believes that Iraqi trade unions have an important role to play in the democratic evolution of the country.

Western Sahara

Western Sahara has been called Africa’s last colony. It was illegally occupied by Morocco in 1975, after the Spanish withdrew, in defiance of the United Nations which recognised the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination.
