Pay Latest
The second meeting of the 2012/13 JNCHES pay negotiations took place on 20 April. The discussion focussed on the real terms loss in pay that staff have suffered over the last three settlements and how the union demands for a living wage for all staff in higher education could be addressed.
The employers responded by improving their initial offer of 0.5% on all pay points to 0.8%. They also agreed to have further discussions with the UCEA Board on the living wage.
All the higher education unions have rejected the offer. The offer fails to match the increases in the cost of living, let alone address the fall over the last three years. We believe a further increase is affordable, as universities posted record surpluses last year.
A final meeting of JNCHES will take place on 22 May. We will update branches with any developments.
Higher Education Joint Union Pay Claim 2012
(04/05/2012)The pay claim for Higher Education staff 2012 has been submitted jointly on behalf of the higher education trade unions. The claim is submitted against a background of continuing high inflation and that since 2009 the New JNCHES national bargaining process has delivered a low or below inflation pay award. The effect of this is that across the higher education workforce, staff are reporting real falls in income and difficulties in maintaining their standards of living.
It is also the view of the trade union side that since the introduction of New JNCHES, the employer’s side has deliberately restricted the scope of bargaining.

(16/12/2011)Further to circular HE 27/11 the result of the pay consultation was that a significant majority of branches agreed to note the offer. UNISON will be writing to the university employers to confirm our position.
We expect that all HE unions will be in a position to accept or note the offer early in the new year and that universities will be able to pay the award in the January pay roll. Details of the full settlement will be sent in the new year.
We are aware that members will be disappointed with the pay award this year, particularly in light of the continued increases in the cost of living.
